Planning for the 2001 Joint Geosciences Assembly (JGA) is already well under way. The meeting will be held in the Taipei International Convention Center, located in Taipei, Taiwan, from September 25 to 28, 2001. The meeting is organized by Chinese Geoscience Union, Geological Society located at Taipei, Chinese Geophysical Society, Meterological Society of Republic of China, National Space Program Office, National Science Council.

Meeting Highlights

The East Asia is one of the most populated areas in the world. This region is characterized by its multiform landscapes and complex environments enriched with bounty natural resources. The future development of this area is vital to the wellbeing of human and regional security. The evolution of natural environments, including active tectonics and interaction of ocean currents, uplift of the Tibetan Plateau as well as the evolution of the East Asia monsoon climatic system set the backdrop of the natural environments of this region. Manifestations of this long-term background include the prevailing seasonal reversal climates, complicated peninsula and archipelago terra, where five hundred million people are striving for better living standards. Nevertheless, this area is threatened not only by frequent natural catastrophes (typhoon, flood, earthquake, and volcano eruption), but also anthropogenic hazards (forest burning, pollution, and debris flow). A better understanding of the evolutionary trend and the status quo of the natural environments is essential for deploying a sustainable development agenda for this region.

Field trip information
A post conference field trip (Sept. 28-29) is currently organized by Drs. H.T Chu and
W.S. Chen. They are going to lead us to visit the 1999 surface rupture and landslide caused by the Chi-Chi
earthquake, and probably the trenching site if the weather allows.   The total expense is US$100.
Please pay for this trip to conference booth, which will be active during Sept. 25 to 28.
